Lei Hulu Classes (First and Second cut feathers)

Native Hawaiian feather artist and cultural practitioner Enoka Phillips offers an introduction to the art of Hawaiian featherwork, grounded in the preservation, practice, and perpetuation of ancestral knowledge.

Rooted in both traditional ʻike and contemporary practice, this five-week series introduces students to the techniques, cultural foundations, and creative process of making lei hulu. Students will learn how to prepare and handle feathers, create and organize bundles, explore design principles, and construct a lei hulu poepoe using first- and second-cut feathers.

Throughout the series, students will create their own lei while developing a deeper understanding of the cultural significance of featherwork, the care and preparation of materials, and the importance of carrying these practices forward.

All supplies are provided, and no prior experience is necessary.
