Lei Piko is where it all started.
This lei is a beginning. A remembering. A returning.
Lei Piko marks a pivotal moment in my journey as a feather artist and practitioner. In the early days, I worked only with dyed goose feathers—bright, reliable, and safe. I was drawn to their color, but hesitant to explore deeper working with natural feathers.
That changed when one of my Kumu, Susie Uweko’olani, gifted me a bag of Chinese golden pheasant feathers. She told me, “Try this you’re ready.”
She was an inspiration to many—but especially to me. No matter what life threw our way, she always reminded me: “There’s always time to make a lei.”
What began as a quiet challenge became a transformation. I fell in love with the natural beauty and movement of these feathers—the way they catch the light, the way they breathe. Working with them felt different. More honest. More alive. They became more than just material; they became a part of me.
He makana liʻi, akā nui ke aloha a me ka hopena.
A small gift, but full of love and lasting impact
